VAR will make its European Championship debut this summer following a mixed reaction to it in domestic football.
The video assistant referee system performed well at the 2018 World Cup, not taking the limelight in the tournament but still overturning several decisions when necessary to create moments of high drama.
VAR will make its European Championship debut this summer
Unfortunately, VAR's introduction to the Premier League has been far less successful, attracting a host of criticism on a near weekly basis.
Like in the Premier League, VAR will be used at the Euros to make judgements on key incidents in matches such as penalties, goals and red cards.
The remote officials will be based at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland and will have a direct communication with the match referee and officials for any given match.
UEFA have two rooms set up in Nyon to review the action meaning different games played at the same time will still be given full attention.
Every game will have a VAR referee despite multiple cities and stadiums being used in the tournament.
There will also be an assistant VAR referee and an offside video referee who focus on specific incidents.
The on-field referees will have touchline monitors and will be encouraged to use them as much as possible when VAR intervenes.
VAR was heavily criticised throughout the 2020/21 Premier League season
